Plato told the tale of when all were one with their love, joined as a perfect circle, rolling across the Earth.
But they became too self important, thinking themselves even greater than the Gods, rolling so high and far that the Gods punished them by separating the pairs, and leaving man with an unspeakable desire to find their soulmate.
